A statue of whom you must know his name.
In front of the University Hall, a bronze statue of Purdue’s benefactor sit quietly on a bench — as he once did himself almost 140 years ago. John Purdue lived 1802 to 1876. He was a prominent businessman in Lafayette. Purdue was known for taking special interest in students, even paying for the education of those he thought held promise. The bench will read, “For John Purdue, education was the flame that lit the world,” which is a quote from a biography about him.
In order for students to memorize Purdue’s namesake, this sculpture was finished in 2012 by an Illinois-based sculptor Julie Rotblatt-Amrany and it was installed on campus in April 2013.
